One for the books…

For a laugh, listen to Joe Queenan, author of, most recently, One for the Books, talking about his prolific reading on NPR. For a sigh, scroll down and read the comments, which prove Wavy Gravy’s assertion that if you don’t have a sense of humor, it just isn’t funny. Dios mío, NPR, wherefore art thy listeners so earnest and defensive? In an excerpt from the book, Queenan defends the book itself, the tangible page-turning object that can surprise you not just by telling you a new story when you come to it again after months or years, a different person than you were the first (or second, or third) time you encountered it, but also by dropping from its leaves some sweet or salty memory—the metro ticket, the love note, the shopping list. Or flower petals, such as these above, falling from the dictionary this morning when I picked it up off the table to put it away.
